Cut a banjo frailing “scoop” for the first time last week. It was a gift from a friend to another friend, so I couldn’t post it before.
Pulled the last 5 frets and went to town with hand tools. Takes a lot longer, but it’s just too easy to make a mistake with power tools on something this delicate. Glad to report that we have a happy customer!
(Oldtime and folk players often use the clawhammer style, striking the stings in that area just above the pot for that “clucky” tone. Cutting the scoop allows them to dig in with the thumb and fingertips without bumping frets and wood.)
